This is the InterVozes site, from the research group PRO.SOM at the Federal University of Bahia, coordinated by professor Sílvia Maria Guerra Anastácio.

The Project, Translation, the Process of Creation and Sound Medias (PRO.SOM): Studies in Inter-Lingual and Inter-Arts Translation aims to continue research started by the group in 2008. At this stage of the Project, we intend to discuss critical studies which examine questions related to radio-phonic aesthetics especially concerning the history and characteristics of the genre. In particular, we have been focusing of English-language authors, among whom is Herbert George (HG) Wells, whose texts have been studied, translated and adapted for an audio-book by members of PRO.SOM over the last three years; this English author has provided great ammunition for the research productivity for the coordinator of the project. Further, the group has developed studies about the process of creation in several languages, and has increasingly improved its productions, especially related to sound media.

This research can be justified as follows: for enriching investigations into Critical Genetics, including the most diverse processes of creation, not only because in promotes the compiling of genetic dossiers of the artistic works produced by the group, as well as other authors/artists analyzed by the team; by promoting studies about inter-lingual Translation; for establishing an inter-arts dialogue, namely between verbal and non-verbal languages, medias, arts and/or diverse semiotic systems; for deepening studies about radiophonic aesthetics; for enriching the market of sound medias with the audio-books produced from recording and publication of the literary works translated and adapted from foreign languages into Portuguese, whether in neutral or non-interpreted versions (Braille for blind people), or as a version interpreted by actors; for being a project with social reach, considering that a significant parcel of each published audio-book is distributed to the Institutes for the Blind throughout Brazil.

The audiobooks published also have a printed version of its Portuguese translation or of the screenplay, as well as two sound versions: one interpreted by students/actors and professors from the UFBA School of Theater or community actors; and a blank or neutral reading without interpretation catering especially to people with sight impairment. Up until 2015, the versions were produced in MECDaisy, however, with the suspension of that Program, audiobooks were thereafter produced in PDF in order to enable access to a reading without interpretation of the material produced.

Additionally, since 2012, we have developed the Elizabeth Bishop (1911-1979) Manuscript Project accessible electronically (sub-project PRO.SOM) which aims to organize a digital data base with the work manuscripts of Elizabeth Bishop, which constitute the Bishop Collection, headquartered at the UFBA Language School. In this creative dossier, there are poetic and prose manuscripts as well as plentiful correspondences, photos, drawings, watercolors painted by Bishop, articles from newspapers and magazines of the time that she lived in Brazil, from the 1950s to the start of the 1970s. Using the methodology of Genetic Critique (SALLES, 1992; GRÉSILLON, 2007), these work documents of Bishop are being digitalized and her facsimiles organized, with descriptions added and summaries to facilitate everything for the researcher who has access to this platform.

For the initial organization of these documents, the interactive tool, Prezi (2009), was used, which serves to both file the documents from the digitalized process to electronic means, as well as enable them to be presented in academic meetings, since they have an approximation resource (zoom) which allows for the amplification of filed materials. Currently the Bishop dossier is in the process of being compiled on PHL©Elysio – Personal Home Library, developed to systematize several files in a virtual library. These materials, organized thus, constitute a rich data base for research about Elizabeth Bishop’s creative process. The results of the research will benefit both the targeted public, which involved scholars of Genetic Critique and those interested in the writings of the author Elizabeth Bishop, as well as researchers who propose a curriculum with convergent and multi-media studies. The coordinator of PRO.SOM is a specialist in the studies about Elizabeth Bishop and has published the book Playing with Images in the Universe of Creation of Elizabeth Bishop (O Jogo das Imagens no Universo da Criação de Elizabeth Bishop (1999).

Through the public bid, PROEXT 2010, the PRO.SOM project received important support to build the PRO.SOM studio at UFBA’s Language School as well as for the financing of 24 research scholarships for students at the Language and Theater schools at UFBA. PRO.SOM also received from 2011 to 2015, scholarships for foreign languages for the Nucleus for Permanent Extension (NUPEL) at UFBA for students/actors interested in recording audio-books in the PRO.SOM studio. In exchange for the recording, these actors could study foreign languages with scholarships from NUPEL. And it was thus that our collection of audiobooks started.

In 2011, we managed to publish our first audiobook, from the Federal University of Bahia’s publishing arm (EDUFBA) with support from the Foundation for Research Support of the State of Bahia (FAPESB).

We highlight below the support of DESENBAHIA, the State of Bahia Agency to Foment Research which in 2015 ceded resources to the Project to produce six audiobooks, which were also all launched by EDUFBA.

The last two audiobooks are the result of the Extension Project developed between 2010 and 2011, which involved several professors from the Department of German Languages from the Language Institute of the Federal University of Bahia.

In 2017, we had the publication of the audiobooks Três vivas para o bebê!!! (Three cheers for the baby!!!) with the support of the rectory’s office of University Extension Program of UFBA (PROEXT), from the rectory’s office of Planning and Budget of UFBA (PROPLAN), from the Down Movement and the Project Embrace Microcephaly; and the Time Machine by H.G. Wells, with financial support from the rectory’s office of University Extension Program of UFBA (PROEXT) and the rectory’s office of Planning and Budget of UFBA (PROPLAN).

The audiobooks produced have been launched with 300 to 400 copies and around 100 or more of those are distributed to the Libraries and Institutes for the Blind throughout the whole country and to NGOs that support people with some kinds of special needs.

To develop our work over all these years, we have been further helped by scholarships for students at the Scientific and Post Graduate Initiation, furnished by several institutions for encouraging research. Currently, we have received three scholarships from the Institutional Program for Scientific Initiation Scholarships (PIBIC); two from the Scholarship Management System of the Initiation of University Extension (PIBIEX); two from the program PERMANECER; and one from FAPESB for a master’s program; and another for a doctorate program from CAPES and a doctorate scholarship from FAPESB for members of the project.

We plan to publish, very soon, the following audiobooks: The Legend of Iping by H.G. Wells (in the process of being editing at EDUFBA); The Island of Dr. Moreau, a novel by H.G. Wells (translated, screenplay made and in the process of recording); Taste and Sound: causes told of northeastern receipts (screenplay made and in process of recording).

Projects developed by the Coordination team of PRO.SOM:

The Project of Inter-Institutional Collection of Texts Translated from French/English to Portuguese about the Processes of Inter-Arts Creation and Electronic Editions (2013-2014) includes faculty and students from the Federal University of Bahia, the Federal University of Santa Catarina and the Catholic University of Rio Grande do Sul. The goal was to give access to a Portuguese-speaking public, interested in Genetic Critique, texts originally published in French and English about the Process of Creation in Theater, Cinema, Cultural History and Electronic Publishing.

The post-doctorate project, The War of the Worlds: A Proposal for a Translation of H.G. Wells’ work for a Radiophonic Play (2013-2014) performed by Professor. Dr. Sílvia Anastácio, and aimed to translate and adapt the text of H.G. Wells’ The War of the Worlds, A Guerra dos Mundos (1898), in order to produce a radiophonic play.

The research Family Therapy Goes to the Cinema (A Terapia de Família vai ao Cinema) (2008 – 2014) used the cinema as a context for the construction of knowledge in which family therapists had the opportunity to discuss theoretical concepts which permeate distinct approaches to family therapy based on the plots of the films included in this analysis.

The research Expatriated Families and a Mosaic of Narratives (2007-2009) proposes to analysis the collection of narratives which consider the experiences of expatriated families and members of organization involved in the process of sending employees to live overseas. The main objective was to develop and share strategies which enables those interested in the issue of repatriation to deal with the impacts of globalization on the families.

In 2007, the book, As narrativas e o processo de recriação do sujeito, (Narratives and the process of recreation of the subject) in partnership with professor Dr. Célia Nunes Silva. The second edition of the book was launched in 2008, under the title As narrativas e o processo de recriação do sujeito: a semiótica das metáforas (Narratives and the process of recreation of the subject: the semiotics of metaphors).

Cultural translation and animation in the Simpsons (2006-2012), a sub-project of PRO.SOM, has the objective of proposing a dialogue in several episodes of the Simpsons and literary texts that are the source of inspiration, and had as their basis research about social representations in which the intention was to focus on cultural and gender questions, as well as myths and prejudices that North American culture entertains about Brazil.

Processes of creation and inter-art translation (2004-2011), a sub-project of PRO.SOM, presented as the object of research the study of the creation processes in literature, art, and performances, following an approach which emphasizes the analysis of modern and contemporary manuscripts. The objective was to expose the laws that govern the processes analyzed to understand the dynamic of creation, as well as the cultural representations and identities that are found throughout the dossiers analyzed.

Inter-media: Studies about inter-media relations (2004 – ), in which professor Dr. Sílvia Anastácio is the researcher, under the coordination of professor Dr. Thaïs Flores, from UFMG. The project aims to discuss the concept of inter-media relations and the place for studies about the relations between the various forms of discourse / art / text, which have been focused on from the perspective of Comparative Literature and of Inter-Art Studies. Further, it seeks to investigate the pertinence of the concept of inter-media relations, in order to examine texts that are using increasingly complex medias.

In 2006, the book The Creation of Orlando and its Film Adaptation: feminism and power in Virginia Woolf and Sally Potter (A Criação de Orlando e sua Adaptação Fílmica: feminismo e poder em Virginia Woolf e Sally Potter), the result of the first post-doctoral Project, undertaken at the Federal University of Minas Gerais.
